I arrived in Danli, Honduras, a fresh, naive 2nd year medical student. I left Danli 6 weeks later with a much greater understanding of the depth of suffering that lives there day in and day out. I was able to work in the hospital delivering babies, so many babies! Under such conditions--no pain meds, laying flat on their backs, very little warmth from the available medical staff. Amazing what the medical staff does do, with so few resources though. I got to go on medical brigades out into rural communities that have no steady medical care. We brought medicine, and learned how to interview patients in spanish, how to treat "lambrisas"-worms. Lots of em! The other volunteers were really amazing also. The program is called "Mountain Movers Missions" and is run by Kathy Rubio. They are supported by a church in the States.
