It doesn’t take long working in tropical countries to learn that trees can be deadly. The dangers are usually related to the season. Coconut palms for example cause a good deal of blunt trauma. A 10 or 15 lb. coconut falling from 20 ft can easily kill. Skull fractures, broken necks, clavicle fractures and foot fractures are not uncommon. Sometimes the nuts will fall on people climbing the trunks - knocking them to the ground. Fruit trees, particularly mangoes pose another problem. Children seem especially at risk, particularly toward the end of the season. Then, as the fruits become scarce, they must take greater risks to harvest the last remaining fruits on the outer limbs. Falls are inevitable.
