The Rabid Donkey

An old African Missionary once told me a story about how when he was first in Kenya. The husband of an old woman came to him in the middle of the night pleading for help. Apparently, their donkey had become rabid and that afternoon had bitten his wife on the arm and would not let go. The villagers tried for hours, beating the animal, pouring water on it, even touching a hot stick to its nose - nothing worked. In desperation, they asked the doctor for help. He grabbed his medical bag and a bottle of medicine from the dispensary. It was an hours walk by moonlight till they reached the village. The doctor drew up a large syringe of tranquilizer and injected the poor brute. Within a few minutes its eyes began to droop, it loosened it’s grip and let go. The woman’s arm was badly torn and the wound was surely infected with the rabies virus. At daybreak the woman was carried to the hospital; there she received proper wound care and her life was saved
